This multi-campus University, founded under the aegis of Ramakrishna Mission, came into existence in July, 2005. Declared as deemed-to-be-university by Ministry of Human Resource Development, under Section 3 of UGC Act, 1956, the University has its head office at Belur and operates through its various ‘off-campus’ Faculty centres located at different branch centres of Ramakrishna Mission.

To start with, the following ‘thrust areas’ have been chosen :

1. Disability Management and Special Education

2. Integrated Rural Development including Tribal Development

3. Indian Cultural and Spiritual Heritage and Value Education

4. Disaster Management including Relief and Rehabilitation

Activities :

1. BEd, MEd, MPhil, PhD and diploma courses in Special Education (hearing impairment, visual impairment and mental retardation) under the Faculty of Disability Management and Special Education and Bachelor’s and Master’s courses in Physical Education and Adapted Physical Education (for the handicapped), Yoga and Fitness, and diploma and postgraduate diploma courses in Special Olympics (for the mentally retarded) under the Faculty of General and Adapted Physical Education and Yoga, at Coimbatore Mission branch with 105 students.

2. Diploma course in Integrated Self Development and postgraduate diploma course in Essentials of Spiritual Heritage of India, Integrated MA course in Sanskrit, in the School of Indian Heritage, at the Department of Sanskrit, under the Faculty of Indian Culture and Spiritual Heritage with 166 students at Belur.

3. MSc and PhD courses in Integrated Rural Development and Management, postgraduate diploma course in Agro-based Biotechnology, and courses on Medicinal Plants and Ayurvedic Drug Technology, under the Faculty of Integrated Rural Development and Management, at Narendrapur branch with 24 students.

4. BSc and MSc courses under the Faculty of Integrated Rural and Tribal Development and postgraduate diploma course in Agro-based Biotechnology at Ranchi (Morabadi) centre with 10 students.

5. Vivekananda Research Centre at Swami Vivekananda’s Ancestral House, Kolkata, for doctoral and post-doctoral research in mathematical sciences, philosophy, social sciences, Ramakrishna-Vivekananda thought, consciousness studies, etc.

6. Rural development activity by setting up Village Resource Centres (VRCs) under isro to impart tele-education, tele-medicine knowledge, etc in rural areas of West Bengal and Jharkhand.
